While aging, T-Mobile’s myTouch 4G is still a solid handset and I personally know a handful of people with the phone in their pockets. Starting today, owners of the sleek handset will be receiving the Android 2.3 update through a OTA update. That said, the update will be rolled out slowly at first, and some users may have to wait until the end of the year before they see any of that Gingerbread goodness.
From the T-Mobile website:
T-Mobile and HTC are proud to announce the Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) system upgrade for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. There will be a limited pilot for the update starting July 20. A broader rollout to myTouch 4G customers will begin in the coming weeks and will continue through the end of the year.
The update includes:
New features:
2010 Exchange compatibility
New version of Swype
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS
Improved issues:
Bluetooth® audio works better when answering a call from phone and Bluetooth is paired
Display is more stable and responsive during boot up or use
Domestic roaming data connection is more stable
Message inbox saves
Various software and stability improvements
T-Mobile also makes note that users can’t pull the update to their handsets, so you’re just going to have to wait. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry about it because you can’t do it.
Usually OTA updates just take weeks to roll out but given that this first batch is a pilot, we’re wondering if the update itself is really ready for prime time. That said, if there are still some lingering bugs that need to be addressed, it would be better to have the update sent to a smaller amount of people instead of the entire myTouch 4G user base, only to have to send another update to fix it. In a perfect world, T-Mobile would send the update out when it’s good and ready but the carrier has been put under fire before for taking too long with updated to its Android handsets before.
Since this is Android we’re talking about here, it likely won’t take long before the update is sent to the right person who will then repackage the official update into a flashable zip file for anyone who just can’t wait any longer, or hasn’t installed a custom ROM at this point.
Now that the myTouch 4G Gingerbread update is on its way, hopefully Magenta can get to work on the G2, Galaxy S 4G, and the G2X‘s official Gingerbread update.
