We’ve got a lot of new BlackBerry devices launching imminently, but there are still a few more coming down the pipe. There’s the Curve code-named Apollo, of course, but there’s also one that we only caught a glimpse of in January’s CDMA roadmap leak called the Curve Touch. A few fresh pictures of a live device have surfaced, showing that it’s still in the works.
There’s no added confirmation of specs along with these pictures, but we’re expecting the BlackBerry 9380 to be a slightly lower-end version of the 9850/60. The screen is a bit more along the lines of the Torch 9810, measuring 3.2 inches with a 480 x 360 resolution, and running on an 800 MHz processor like the upcoming Curve 9360. NFC is listed on the Curve Touch in the CDMA roadmap leak, but so were a bunch of the new BlackBerry devices that never ended up getting it. Still, it should have the same 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording that the other new device should have.
While it might seem as bizarre to name the BlackBerry 9380 a Curve as it was to name the 9850/60 a Torch, the gist I’m getting from RIM is that now they’re positioning Curve devices as entry-level, and Torch as the high-end touch device. That doesn’t leave much room for the form factor within the device’s identity, but I guess that’s par for course when it comes to convoluted marketing from RIM. Regardless, I dig the design, especially the flush keys that are akin to the Storm2.
This is yet another OS 7 device, and seeing as we haven’t heard about any launch dates or carrier info, it’s probably a ways to launch. That said, by the time the 9380 becomes available, it may be prudent to hold out for a QNX BlackBerry landing sometime early next year.
