Today, Onavo announced the launch of its new Android app, Onavo Lite. Onavo Lite is a free app that helps Android owners control their data usage and manage data costs by providing alerts and warnings, data plan advice and blocking data hogging apps. The app is connected to the Onavo Android Community, which crowdsources information on other apps and data usage from across the globe.
In its announcement, the company explained its interest in the Android OS by mentioning one of its glaring flaws “the flip side of Android’s openness is that apps are free to use up mobile data without any accountability. Just power up your phone and a hundred apps could spring to life and eat up your data plan, in the background.”
With Android’s mobile data flaws within its OS, the company feels “Android users urgently need the control offered by Onavo Lite,” but whether that’s true or not is meant to be seen. Onavo claims to have saved users almost 20 million MB of data, since launching Onavo for iPhone/iPad back in April, and hopes to bring the same success to Android users abroad.
