Hands-on Preview: Burnout Crash for iOS [Video]

Criterion Games’ Burnout series has been one of my favorite racing series, the latest of which Burnout Paradise, was a game that provided an amazing driving experience, even months after its release. One classic mode that was sorely missed by most Burnout fans was Crash Mode, which allowed players to cause additional damage to vehicles after crashing into them. Criterion Games recently released a game dedicated to the classic Crash mode for the Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network, and PC called Burnout Crash, and it’s making its way to iOS this holiday season.

Burnout Crash brings the classic Crash mode and dedicates an entire game around pure vehicular destruction. You’ll start off driving one of six vehicles each with their own stats down an intersection. Players will need to crash into another vehicle to then begin the Crash mode experience. Once a crash is initiated, players will be able to move their vehicle in a particular direction with a simple tap of the screen. During my time with the game, I felt it performed very well to its PC & console counterparts and tapping on the screen to guide my vehicle was very easy to get the hang of.

When Burnout Crash is released, it’ll have three game modes to play across 18 different traffic junctions which need to be unlocked by earning stars from previous traffic junctions. Each traffic junction has its own set of goals that need to be completed in order to earn stars. Some stars may be easily attainable, such as scoring ‘x’ amount of points, while others require a bit more strategy.

Autolog, which was developed by Criterion Games for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, has been included in Burnout Crash and has players keeping tabs on others in their Origin friends list. Scores from your friends’ games will be prominently displayed as you enter your game, which I found to be a nice touch as I’ll know what score I’ll need to achieve in order to dethrone the top person on my list.

Burnout Crash is planned to be released this holiday season for the iPad and iPhone, so prepare yourself for the onslaught of vehicular mayhem as you bundle up by a warm fire.
