Few days ago we first caught the LG DoublePlay and now it’s official, announced alongside the fifth annual LG U.S. National Texting Championship. The somewhat weird lookin’ device rocks a split QWERTY keyboard and dual capacitive touchscreens, one measuring 3.5 and the other one (between two sides of the keyboard) 2 inches. In addition, this youth-oriented Android smartphone also comes with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recorder, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, while Gingerbread is running the show. Not sure I like it that much, but I’m pretty confident many SideKick fans will enjoy it.

As for the 2011 LG U.S. National Texting Championship, it will see contestants competing for chance to become part of texting history, a $50,000 Grand Prize and be named the fastest texter in the U.S. of A. For the occasion, they [contestants] will use the brand new DoublePlay to type phrases exactly as they appear on LG plasma screens, while distracted by blind folds, complex phrases and marathon game play.
