The Swivl is a nifty iPhone 4/4S dock made for video capture. It swivels in any direction — up, down, left, and right — automatically to track your movements so you are always in the frame. You can mount the iPhone in portrait or landscape mode, and Swivl has a convenient hole to press the home button when it’s in portrait mode. It also comes with a remote control (which acts as the target for motion tracking on non-iOS devices) and a tripod mount accessory for shooting with a regular digital camera instead.
I’d imagine this is much more efficient than bugging your friend to film you. Video bloggers (vloggers) and frequent FaceTime callers will find this handy as well. Plus, if you own an iPhone 4 or camera that isn’t capable of video stabilization, the Swivl should help dramatically. It does utilize face detection technology, so I’m not sure how well it would work in low-light situations. (Update: One commenter points out that the Swivl actually tracks you via a wearable marker and does work well in all lighting conditions.)
The Swivl will ship in early 2012 for a suggested retail price of $159.99. Swivl says “Demand has been high and will outstrip our supply of units for the first several months. So don’t delay. Reserve your Swivl today to insure you get one early next year.”
