There’s been a bit of a scuttlebutt the last few days because the iPhone 4S’ Siri wouldn’t provide information on birth control or abortions even though it would respond to requests about drugs, murder and other things. Apple said this was a glitch and it shouldn’t be interpreted as the company endorsing any side of that debate.
“Our customers want to use Siri to find out all types of information, and while it can find a lot, it doesn’t always find what you want,” said Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple, to the New York Times. “These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better, and we will in the coming weeks.”
I always thought this Siri story was a bit overblown, as I found in my review that it is definitely still a beta service and some issues like this were bound to pop up. It’s kind of funny that Apple would be accused of being a conservative company too, as I always saw it as one of the most liberal big companies out there.
