A couple of days ago we posted a story which had Morgan Stanley predicting 37 million Nokia handsets will ship in 2012. I wrote my concerns about numbers I felt were potentially too optimistic. Well, the folks over at TechRadar spotted a completely different spin on the story, which brings some validations to such a lofty prediction. It turns out that the little 1 above the 2011 column (in the chart) confirms that Nokia has shipped 1 million Lumia handsets in 2011, all within the last 6 weeks of the year. Although these are impressive numbers, we still have to keep in mind devices shipped doesn’t represent those sold.
Since it’s too early to report anything concrete, don’t expect Microsoft to start releasing activation numbers until they have something impressive to announce, instead, rough estimates will be scattered out for the time being. That said, I’ll say it again, Microsoft has an uphill climb when it comes to grabbing some of the consumer mind share away from some of the leaders in the market today. There’s competition all over the place, and with Android and iOS getting better by the year, it’s a daunting task for a new operating system to capture millions of consumers so quickly.
