LG’s officially announced four new smartphones before Mobile World Congress kicks off this coming Monday. It started with the 5 inch 4:3 aspect ratio Vu, then yesterday with the L3, L5, and L7, and now today we have the Optimus 3D Cube. Looking at the name of the product itself, it’s not too hard to guess what the key selling point of this thing will be: 3D. Like the first generation LG Optimus 3D, this updated model has a 4.3 inch display that pushes 800 x 480 pixels in three dimensions. It also has a pair of 5 megapixel cameras on the back. Where things actually improve is under the hood. There you’ll find a 1.2 GHz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread (seriously?!), and NFC. SK Telecom will start selling the Cube next month for 847,000 Korean won, which is roughly $750. We’ll try to get our hands on this thing when we’re in Spain next week, especially to see how thin it is compared to the original.
Now is anyone actually going to buy this thing or even care about 3D? LG is hoping they’ll be able to sell you a high end spec sheet, but our eyes are rolling over right now. What we’re really waiting for is LG’s as yet to be announced quad core flagship device. Besides a Tegra 3, it’s supposed to come with a new 4.7 inch LCD that LG has developed, one that’s rumored to be even better than the 4.5 inch 720p display they put inside the Nitro HD for AT&T, which is also known as the Spectrum on Verizon.
What do you think, are we being too harsh on LG? To us it seems like they’re just not trying hard enough. Everything they do is compared to Samsung’s efforts, which in turn are compared to Apple’s efforts, so LG is essentially a third class citizen.
Here’s hoping they can change our minds at MWC.
