Netflix dropped a bombshell on Research In Motion yesterday when it confirmed it does not have plans to make an app for BlackBerry devices, including the PlayBook tablet.
Twitter user Jon Robinson angrily tweeted Netflix Helps asking “Where is my #playbook app? You’ve had enough time and no more excuses! Thanks!” Two hours later, he received an arguably unexpected response: “We don’t have any current plans to support Blackberry devices, including Playbook.”
This is a major blow for RIM, but I think it’s safe to say the company is used to suffering from one miserable failure after another lately. Netflix in particular choosing to stay away from BlackBerry is even worse because, well, have you seen the list of devices it does support? It’s abundant, to say the least. Netflix is on Funai streaming players, which I hadn’t even heard of until about five minutes ago.
I suppose one way to get Netflix on your PlayBook is to hope someone figures out how to sideload the Android version (now that PlayBook OS 2.0 is out) but that could easily go haywire, too. With RIM losing smartphone market share every day and Netflix tending to think it can predict the future, the two companies are just not compatible with each other.
The final chance could be if Netflix decides to support BlackBerry OS 10 once it starts shipping. It’s also RIM’s last hope to stay at all relevant. We’re likely to hear much more about the first BlackBerry 10 devices next week at Mobile World Congress 2012, so stay tuned.
