Remember the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II? Both were announced two months ago, sans price or release date. Mary-Jo Foley from All About Windows said the Lumia 900 would be released on March 18th during episode 234 of the Windows Weekly podcast which aired in January. Now March 18th is just 11 days away. Strangely enough, today AT&T posted a site that asks people to enter their email address so that they can be the first to find out about “an exciting new addition” to their lineup. Coincidentally, Microsoft updated their Windows Phone site to show both the Lumia 900 and the Titan II as “Coming soon!”. What does this all mean? Well, if we had to take a guess we’d say Mary-Jo is right, that AT&T will indeed launch the Lumia 900 in less than 2 weeks, and now the only thing we’re left wondering is how much it’s going to cost. Rumor has it that it’ll be just $99 with a 2 year contract, which sounds great … but that’s going to go up against the $99 iPhone 4. Remember kids, over 80% of the smartphones AT&T sold in Q4 2011 were iPhones, which says a lot.
This phone, the Lumia 900, is going to make or break Nokia this year. They need to show Americans that the company is back and are taking things very seriously. They also need to distract the media from talking about Windows Phone 8, which will launch at roughly the same time as the desktop version of Windows 8; late Q3, early Q4. Nokia obviously doesn’t want anyone buying the Lumia 900 knowing that their smartphone will be “obsolete” in half a year. But hey, now that’s we’re post Mobile World Congress, do you think people have already forgotten about the Lumia 900 and instead are looking forward to devices like the HTC One X?
We’ll just have to wait and see some hard numbers.
