Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900, was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January of this year. AT&T said they would offer it, but they failed to mention when it would actually hit store shelves or say how much it’s going to cost. Here we are, two months later, and we still don’t have those details. Earlier rumors suggested it would come out on the 18th of March, which is this coming Sunday, but now there’s word on the street that an April 8th launch date is more likely. This information comes from someone who claims to be an employee at one of AT&T’s retail stores in California. The guys at The Verge can’t verify whether or not this dude is legit, but they say that they’ve independently heard rumors of a “second week of April” release date. As for the price tag, The Boy Genius Report is pretty confident that it’ll be just $99 with a 2 year contract.
The bigger question is of course should you even buy this thing? Mobile World Congress ended a little more than 2 weeks ago, and the devies we saw there were absolutely insane. More specifically HTC’s One X, which will also launch on AT&T with 4G LTE, but instead of Windows Phone and a 4.3 inch 800 x 480 display you get Android on an ultra sharp 720p 4.7 inch screen and a dual core Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon to boot!
Truth be told, we’re not all that thrilled with Windows Phone 7.5, but we are ridiculously excited about Windows Phone 8, which is slated to hit the scene in Q4 of this year. It’ll support the high end specs that geeks want, so why exactly would you want to sign away your soul for two years for the Lumia 900 when a much improved model is just 2 quarters away?
As always, everything in life is about timing.
