Android had almost 70% of the Chinese smartphone market at the end of last year

Google is steadily conquering the world with its Android platform. It’s not just the Western hemisphere that’s under the strong influence of the search giant – users on the Far East love it, too. In fact, at the end of last year, Android had 68.4 percent of the Chinese smartphone market by the number of smartphones sold, which is up from 33.6% at the end of Q1 2011.

Rise of Android brought demise to Symbian, which saw its share more than halve to 18.7% last year.

Meanwhile, Apple saw demand for the iPhone coming from wealthier Chinese cities, with its market share rising from 4.1% in the first quarter to 5.7% at the end of the fourth quarter. The Cupertino giant said China remains a key growth market for them…

Reuters’ report ends with further promise of growth for Android, with two Chinese handset makers, ZTE and Huawei, working on cheap smartphones to be offered by the major operators in the country…
