As gaming in the mobile space becomes more popular, a need for a more graphically rich experience is on order. We’ve seen what the NVIDIA Tegra 3 can do but this quad-core processor with a 12 core GPU is just the beginning.
At HTC Frequencies in Seattle, General Manager Mike Rayfield graced us with his presence to talk the existing and upcoming Tegra family, and the future of mobile gaming. One of Rayfield’s slides was particularly interesting to see, which was the trend of graphics power across PC, console, and mobile devices. The forward-looking chart shows mobile graphics eclipsing the likes of the XBox 360 and PS3 by 2014. While it’s an impressive, if you’ve been following the space, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
Also shown off was a comparison in graphics of the late 90’s-early 2000’s and where that trend will be going in the future. Obviously, with the various configurations and power you can pack into a PC these days, computers will maintain its lead in the graphics arena, at least until we get a glimpse of the new Xbox. But the chart shows mobile devices receiving the same sort of graphics quality found in our consoles today, which should definitely be something to get excited for.
With Tegra Wayne slated for a late 2012/early 2013 release, it could help boost graphics beyond what is found in current generation consoles. We still have more than 6 months to wait and see what Wayne will bring to the table but it’s definitely a good time to be a gamer.
