As spotted by Android and Me and reported by TechCrunch, Google launched a new devices section in the Google Play store and is now selling the unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus for $399. This isn’t the first time Google sold hardware. The Android creator sold the Nexus One directly to customers a few years ago and sales were less than spectacular.
Google’s apparently learned from its earlier missteps. Andy Rubin, Google’s SVP of Mobile and Digital Content, noted in his announcement that, Google has “implemented new customer support services to improve the purchasing experience on Google Play.” This new store should open the way for Google to sell other hardware, including its rumored co-branded tablet that’s expected to debut later this year.
