Stop the presses. Alcatel unveiled a new device that is actually pretty cool. Marked as OT986 — and to be sold under the name of TCL S900 in China — it’s an Android Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone with surprisingly high-end specs that include a 4.5-inch 720 HD screen and TI OMAP 4460 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz. Moreover, there’s also a 5-megpaixel with LED flash on the back, 2-megapixel front-facing one, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in memory, HSPA+ and Wi-Fi connectivity. All this is packed into a 9.75 mm thin body that can easily fit your pocket.
In a nutshell, this is definitely a device we wouldn’t expect from Alcatel which is usually associated with low-to-mid end products.
Aside from the default model packing the specs listed above, a lower-end device will also be available, sporting a slightly slower 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 4GB of built-in storage.
The best part is the price – the Alcatel TCL S900 will sell for 1,999 yuan (about $315) in China and we assume this is the price of the lower-end model. Still, $315 for a device with a 720p screen and dual-core processor sounds incredible. Hopefully, Alcatel will bring this baby to the Western hemisphere and put a similar price tag on it. We’ll see…
