We’ve been wondering what happened to Sony Xperia Ion ever since we got our hands on it at CES in January. Well, the cat is out of the bag now and we’ll see the SeXperia Ion land on AT&T on June 24th for a mere $99 on a new contract with the carrier.
As a refresher, the Xperia Ion rocks a 4.6 inch 720p HD Reality display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor, 12.1 megapixel camera, front-facing camera, 16GB of internal storage (expandable with micro SD card), NFC, LTE, micro HDMI port, and is Playstation certified. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Well, the one catch about the Xperia Ion is that it won’t ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. At this point, Sony should know better not to release a handset on Gingerbread when Android 4.0 has been out for quite some time now. Then again, Sony did say that it would be updated shortly after its official release.
This is Sony’s first LTE device, and getting it down to the $99 price point should bode well for sales. The price point also may woo others away from the HTC One X and the upcoming Galaxy S III.
Overall, we dig the handset, even with its lack of Android 4.0. Still, we also wish that the US was getting a US version of the Xperia S with its interesting transparent band around the bottom of the device that added a little flair. The Ion is hardly an ugly device but since it seems to be a black slab with virtually no other color options for AT&T, it could be passed up. While unlikely, we really wish that AT&T will offer up the Ion in that sexy red shell we saw earlier this month.

Xperia ion is complemented by SmartTags****, which let you do things you normally do on your phone, but more quickly and easily, with just one tap. Using near field communication technology, SmartTags let you store device preferences for a variety of locations and situations – like opening and controlling volume on the music player if you head out for a run, turning on GPS and Bluetooth in the car or turning on your alarm and silencing your ringer at night.
