Ben Peckett is probably going to get a ton of angry emails today from one of his clients, Nokia. According to his LinkedIn profile, his title is “Copywriter & Creative Planner” at a Finnish company called Luxus. What does that mean? It’s his job to come up with whiz bang videos that inspire companies like Nokia to try and create products and marketing materials that are “sexy”. One of his videos, for a fictional service called “Nokia Air”, was accidentally made public on his Vimeo page. The internet, being batshit insane and all too ready to jump to conclusions, is now passing around Ben’s video and saying that it’s showing several unannounced future Symbian Belle devices. Let me make this clear as crystal: Ben’s concept video is just that, a concept. Hell, Luxus is a company that even I’ve worked with in the past. When they bid for work they routinely bring videos like “Nokia Air” to wow the marketing manager or product planner who will, at the end of the day, cut them a big fat check.
Now that your hopes and dreams have been crushed, let me try to cheer you up. “Nokia Air” is a glorified syncing engine. The same type of syncing engine that an Android user has access to if they install Chrome on both their desktop and their Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone. Apple will have their own interpretation of “Nokia Air” when they launch iOS 6 and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion later this year. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Microsoft is probably working on something that will mimic what Google and Apple have. In fact, I’m confident in saying that the best part of Windows Phone 8 has to be revealed, and that’s how it’ll integrate with Windows 8.
Expect to hear more about how Microsoft’s platforms will talk to each other later this year.
