Dropped tablets and phones occur more likely than we’d care to admit. We’ve all been there; that high-anxiety moment when we’ve dropped our precious smart device and realize that saving it from certain doom is beyond our control. More and more, smartphone and tablet makers are turning to companies who manufacture more scratch, drop, and scuff-resistant products such as Corning’s Gorilla Glass to ensure devices are able to whether a fall or two, and one of the key things some people look for when buying a device is how well it’ll stand up to our sometimes rough everyday use.

SquareTrade is a company that puts these devices to the test, producing videos that show how different tablets and smartphones fare when dropped or submerged in water. Today, SquareTrade posted a video pitting the two hottest tablets on the market today, Apple’s iPad and Google’s Nexus 7, against each other to determine which tablet is the king of durability.

After conducting three separate drop tests of the two tablets, one of which done into a filled bathtub, Google’s Nexus 7 is the clear winner, besting Apple’s iPad in each of the three tests. While we generally encourage folks to buy a case to go with their tablets, those of you with the Nexus 7 can rest assured knowing it’ll survive a drop or two, which is more than can be said for the iPad.

isn’t that simply because the nexus has a tinier screen and therefore weighs less? Surely a larger piece of glass and a heavier unit will be more vulnerable? I think it would only make sense to compare like sized devices in this way…

Square Trade forgot to mention that new Nexus owners in the UK report screens falling off etc.
