IKEA's print catalog gets augmented reality twist

IKEA has always been among the pioneers in adopting new technologies. Their latest gig is to add a new twist to the popular printed catalog. An augmented reality twist to be more precise. By relying on a mobile app, users are able to access an additional content and get more information about the products they consider buying.

Metaio, which we know for their junaio augmented reality browser, provided the technology to make the magic happen, while McCann-Erickson did all the work (with sub-contractors – app developers, no doubt).

So when you browse the catalog, you’ll see the smartphone icon on select pages. Fire-up the app and get the additional content which can include videos, photo galleries, links to websites and more. Thanks the Metaio’s tech, QR codes are made obsolete as the app can identify all the objects on the page. Pretty cool, don’t you think? Here’s how it looks in real life and if you wonder where can you download IKEA’s new app, the answer is – it’s not ready yet and will be released soon.
