AMD looking to make ARM-based processors?

AMD is exploring an option to make ARM-based processors, which as you know are used in a majority of modern smartphones and tablets. According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, the chip maker looks to supplement its current lineup of x86-based desktop, laptop and server processors with these higher efficiency options.

The company says that the main idea is to reduce costs and improve efficiency of data centers, which would require less power and air conditioning due to efficiency gains of ARM-based CPUs. However, we wouldn’t be surprised that once it masters the technology, AMD also launches processors for mobile devices.

It is said that first AMD-made ARM processors will be released by 2014 and we hope to have some additional insight into their plans by that time…
