Google has released the latest platform distribution numbers on the company’s Android Developer Dashboard, and it paints a familiar picture of the Android landscape. Android 2.3 Gingerbread, now officially 2 years old, continues to dominate the charts, with 54.2% of all devices running on the platform. Android’s tablet-focused 3.X Honeycomb is in 1.8% of all devices.
The latest version of Android, version 4.1 (and 4.2) Jelly Bean is installed on just 2.7% of all Android devices, while the year-old Ice Cream Sandwich is on a respectable 25.8% of all devices. 15.5% of all devices out there are running pre-Gingerbread versions of Android, likely on older, budget Android devices. Here’s hoping the combined distribution on Gingerbread and below devices drops below 50% soon, which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch given the fact that Google shipped 136 million new Android devices in Q3.
