Smartphone and tablets drove app downloads to astronomical heights on Christmas Day,  says a report from  Flurry Analytics. The analytics company’s data suggests more customers activated an Android or iOS device on Christmas day than any other day in history. Not surprisingly, these new owners downloaded a record number of apps as well.

During the month of December, Flurry’s data shows that  customers activated 4 million devices each day. On Christmas Day, this number soared to 17.4 million. App downloads also sky rocketed, reaching 328 million on Christmas Day alone. This is up from the 242 million recorded in 2011 and 112% greater than the 155 million recorded on an average day in December. Interestingly enough, gift giving was split with customers activating as many tablets (51%) as smartphones (49%). This is much different than a typical December day, which favors the phones (80%) over the tablets (20%).

Flurry gets it information from Flurry Analytics, which is used by more than 260,000 mobile apps. The company claims it can detect over 90% of new iOS and Android devices activated each day.

Does that mean more people were glued to their smartphones, downloading apps instead of actually enjoying Christmas? I’d think so.

Before Flurry released any data, I knew big numbers were going be reported. For me personally, I saw a massive jump in downloads over last Christmas. CPMs have also exploded since then (Thank you Airpush!!!!). The 2012 holiday season was very very good, to developers, mobile advertisers, the mobile commerce industry, eBay, Amazon, Square, GoPayment, etc. Mobile had its mojo working from all angles this time. And I think 2013 is going to be even bigger.
