WhatsApp took to Twitter to announce that it set a new one-day record for its messaging service. The company confirmed that it processed a whopping 18 billion messages on New Year’s Eve. The company accepted 7 billion inbound messages and sent out 11 billion outbound messages. According to The Next Web, these stats trump Apple’s iMessage service which handles 1 billion messages each day.

WhatsApp has been on fire recently. Subscriber numbers are growing and the company recently inked a deal with Hong Kong wireless carrier Three that provides customers with unlimited access to the WhatsApp network for a meager  HK$8 (US$1) per month. WhatsApp was also rumored to be in acquisition talks with Facebook, but that rumor proved to be false.
