Sofant Technologies unveiled its revolutionary smart antenna at CES. The solution apparently consumes 90% less energy and can double battery life of mobile devices.

Thus far, the antenna technology has not kept pace with the advances in functionality and performance of smartphones. In addition, the current rollout of new communication protocols such as LTE means ever-increasing pressure on existing antennae.

Sofant’s technology is comprised of RF MEMS, antenna and software to create what they’re calling the SmartAntenna, which can lock onto the best signal available at any given time. By doing so it not only provides a higher level of connectivity than conventional antennae, but also consumes less energy to boost battery life. But that’s not all – carriers also benefit as SmartAntenna can reduce network congestion caused by weak signals and dropped connections, diminishing the need for more base stations.

Sounds pretty promising to me. Can’t wait to see it implemented into mobile device(s)…
