According to a report in Strategy Analytics, mobile phone and smartphone shipments in 2012 continued to climb.  Metrics from analysts and reported quarterly shipments suggest an impressive 1.6 billion mobile phones and 700 million smartphones were shipped in 2012.

Not surprisingly, Samsung, Nokia and Apple were the leaders in both mobile phone and smartphone shipments. Samsung led in both categories with a shipment volume that fell just blow the 400 million mark. Nokia was number two for total mobile phones with 335.9M and 21.3% market share, while Apple pulled into third with 135.8M units and 8.6% market share. On the smartphone side, Apple was second followed by Nokia.
