Microsoft, Qualcomm team-up on Windows Phone 8 reference design for cheap handsets

Microsoft, Qualcomm and some other chipset suppliers are apparently working together on a reference design for cheap handsets. The move is designed to slash the prices of Windows Phone 8 devices and create a compelling solution for tier-two OEMs which could offer these products in the emerging markets, helping the Redmond giant expand its global footprint.

No dates were given as the project may still be in the development phase. Or not – perhaps we get additional information at Mobile World Congress, perhaps not. In any case, offering sub-$200 and even sub-$150 Windows Phone 8 devices could make a big impact in this segment, currently dominated by cheap Android smartphones. We’ll let you know when we hear something new on this. Stay tuned in the meantime…
