HP planning an Android tablet and possibly a smartphone?

Despite its attempt to woo the world with the TouchPad and WebOS, not only does it look like HP is trying to create a tablet again, but said tablet may end up running Android. On top of jumping into the Android tablet world, HP also may be looking to make its own smartphone as well.

ReadWrite’s source claims that the mystery HP Android tablet will ship with NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 CPU and has been in development since last Thanksgiving. However, The Verge’s own source mentioned that details are not set in stone, so it the tablet could end up shipping with another S0C. If HP does end up going with NVIDIA’s offering, it could be one of the first devices to ship with the company’s latest processors, other than the Project SHIELD.

To sweeten the rumor, we might also see an Android-powered smartphone from HP in the future. This wouldn’t be terribly surprising, as CEO Meg Whitman mentioned that the company will eventually get into the arena with such an offering.

“We have to ultimately offer a smartphone because in many countries of the world that would be your first computing device. We are a computing company, we have to take advantage of that form factor.”

If HP is to offer up an Android tablet at some point in the future, we do wonder how it will try to differentiate itself between the likes of Samsung, Sony, and Asus. Still, jumping into the Android tablet or smartphone race isn’t going to be easy, so we’re pretty interesting in seeing what the company will come up with.
