Samsung KNOX is a new end-to-end secure solution made to provide security “hardening from the hardware through to the application layer.”

Incorporating Security Enhanced (SE) Android developed by NSA (National Security Agency), file system level encryption, and integrity management services implemented in both hardware and the Android framework, KNOX offers protection of business data and applications from data leakage, viruses and malware attacks.

The solution is also compatible with existing enterprise infrastructure such as MDM, VPN and directory services, making it easier to implement and manage Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategies.

User on its end taps a dedicated KNOX container icon on the screen to access enterprise applications in a secure environment including email, browser, contacts, calendars, file sharing, collaboration, CRM and business intelligence applications. Moreover, KNOX enables existing Android eco-system applications to automatically gain enterprise integration with zero change to the application source code.

Aligned with the Samsung For Enterprise (SAFE) programme, KNOX will be commercially available in selected Samsung GALAXY devices from the second quarter of the year…

Sansumg’s KNOX is a good start for dual purpose BYOD. I will be curious what features will be offered for the enterprise side. I still think that HIPAA and SOX compliance will still be an issue with KNOX, since it will still leave the user data on the device and that can be a big security issue if the device is lost or stolen. We have this issue in healthcare, but Tigertext at least offers auto-delete of text messages, but for email I don’t think there is a app based solution. Hopefully KNOX feature set will allow remote or auto-delete of emails.
