Niantic Labs, who is more recently known for the Android-only augmented reality game, Ingress, has just released Field Trip for iOS. Niantic Labs is a division of Google, where it released Field Trip for Android last September. Field Trip is a virtual tour guide that will do most of the work for you.

If you don’t know what Field Trip is, let’s get you up to speed. Field Trip is a simple application that helps you find places of interest when you’re either traveling or just looking for something new. From art, historical landmarks, and much more, Field Trip will act like your personal tour guide wherever you are.

All you have to do with Field Trip to get started is define what sort of places you’d like to see, and the application will notify you when you’re close to a place of interest. There’s also a driving mode that offers up similar features.

Currently, Field Trip is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, so if you were looking to bust out your iPad and walk through the city, exploring, you’re out of luck. Please don’t do that anyway.

Either way, if you’re currently exploring a new city, or just want to find something interesting you might have missed around where you live, give Field Trip a try!
