Alright Sega kids, get ready! One of the greatest games of all time is coming to Google Play, in all its blast processed glory. Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Android, and the iOS version is getting an update with all the new extras.
Sega announced the release today on its blog:
“We are happy to announce that the original Sonic the Hedgehog has been remastered and is now available on Android and iOS! Android users have long waited for this classic to appear and today is the day. iOS users who bought the original will be treated to a free update with new features, updates, and more. Following in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Sonic CD in 2011, the original Sonic The Hedgehog game has received an equally robust overhaul! Sonic fans on iOS and Android will see the game better than ever with new widescreen support and can to zoom through Zones at a smooth 60 frames per second. The all-new update allows gamers to unlock Tails and Knuckles as playable characters for the very first time! That’s not all – Sonic enthusiasts will also enjoy a remastered original soundtrack, new leaderboards, achievements, and an all-new Time Attack mode.”
I have a confession to make. I own this game and it’s sequel at least 10 times over. I’ve got at least 2 genesis carts somewhere, it’s on every Sega anthology collection (of which I have several) and I’ve paid to download it on every system that it was available. I’ve probably played Sonic at least every week since I was a little Sega fanboy, only to be eclipsed by Sonic 2.
The Google play store released a remastered version of the excellent Sonic CD awhile back, and Sonic 4 episode 1 and 2 are available (if you must). It’s great to see this classic finally hitting Android. Now, Sega, let’s get Sonic 2!
