According to a report from PCWorld, Mozilla isn’t just focusing on developing smartphones for use with it’s nacient Firefox OS. A tablet running on the Firefox OS is coming soon, although we’re not sure just how soon that will be.
“I’m not going to project when, but I’m going to say we’re moving aggressively and you’ll see things soon. We thought ‘tablet should be easier for us,’ but all the inbound interest was in the direction of smartphones, but we’re going to get to tablets ASAP.” – Brendan Eich, Chief Technology Officer for Mozilla
Last month, Mozilla showed off a tablet which was developed in conjunction with Foxconn running on the Firefox OS. Foxconn is reportedly hiring around 3,000 engineers to help develop for the HTML 5 based Firefox OS.
With regards to working with Foxconn, Eich stated, “We’re looking forward to working with them to see how Firefox OS scales up. We think it scales well. The Web scales better than any graphical UI system I’ve seen thanks to things like CSS. The tablet we showed was an example of that.”
With the first Firefox OS smartphones rolling out in Spain this week, it may not be that long until we see the first tablets running on Firefox OS.
