Foxconn looking to offer mobile services in Taiwan

Foxconn Technology Group is looking beyond its manufacturing business to expand to other markets. According to DigiTimes, the company has submitted an application to Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) in an effort to bid in the country’s upcoming 4G spectrum auction.

Otherwise known as Hon Hai, the Taiwanese technology giant is making its application through its business unit, Ambit Microsystems.

Foxconn’s entry into Taiwan’s 4G race takes the total number of applicants up to seven. The others include existing operators like Asia Pacific Telecom, Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone Telecommunications and Taiwan Mobile. NCC will announce the list of qualified bidders by the end of August with the auction slated for early September.

Presuming Foxconn manages to secure a license, it would be interesting to see where they’ll go from there. If they found it a profitable venture — and I see no reason why it wouldn’t be one — the company may decide to expand to other markets, potentially disrupting the industry. We’ll see where this goes…
