Kodak has led innovation in the point-and-shoot camera market for 50 years now, and now an unofficial and unknown source has created a concept Android smartphone and camera that melds retro Kodak design with modern-day technology. The Kodak Instamatic 2014 looks like an interesting device, and if the concept proves true will launch two models in 2014, and another in 2015.
The Kodak Instamatic 2014 concept shows three different models. The Instamatic 14w and 14 will come touting 14MP cameras, while the 15 Ultra will sport a 16MP camera. The Instamatic 14 and 14w will come with a 4-inch touchscreen and a PixPro 24-140mm f/3.9-5.9 Lens, and 720p HD video capability. The Instamatic 15 Ultra will come with a 5-inch touch screen, a PixPro 24-260mm lens mount f/2.4-5.3 lens, and 1080p HD video support. All models will have a microSD slot for memory expansion.
“Unique Instamatic 2014 user interface brings you all legendary Kodak products on simple touch. Choose your favourite Instamatic model, shooting mode or film material. Taking digital photos with Instamatic 2014 is simple and again more surprising. Use the viewfinder again or shake the phone when shooting to get the right “lightleaks”. That makes your photo experience more enjoyable than ever. Bit of analog surprise with Kodak Instamatic 2014. Tell your future story of life in true past looking images. Right now.”
The Instamatic concept includes a viewfinder, which is something that has been absent from smartphones and point-and-shoot digital cameras for some time now. The device will run on Android but will run a Kodak optimized front end interface layer, which will allow users to quickly utilize a host of filters and photo tweaks. Users will be able to instantly upload photos and videos to their favorite social networking sites, as well as sync their photos to Kodak cloud services.
The Kodak Instamatic 2014 is certainly an interesting concept, and would be an awesome device for Kodak to develop. The device will enter the strange and emerging space of Android devices and smartphones that put the camera experience first, such as the Samsung Galaxy Camera and the Galaxy S4 Zoom. While the Instamatic is just a concept, if launched it would surely appeal to many smartphone users who are already sporting retro camera cases on their devices.
