And we thought today’s mobile processors are already pretty fast. Not fast enough obviously, with TSMC and GlobalFoundries planning to launch a 3GHz ARM-based chip next year. What’s more, the two will be using 20nm technology allowing for 1.9 times better density at 25% less power consumption. That’s pretty awesome when we know that current top chips like Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 and NVIDIA Tegra 3i clocked at 2.3GHz are made using 28nm technology.
As we all know it, with faster speeds come new possibilities that will eventually allow us to have only one device to rely on for all our needs – a smartphone that can be easily turned into a full blown computer when docked at home (or office).
Personally I can’t wait to try out the first Snapdragon 800 and Tegra 4 devices, and can only imagine how fast next year’s 3GHz phones will perform. Hopefully this extra power will be closely followed with new capabilities (like that convergence some of us strive for)…
