iOS users are getting a nice little update to WhatsApp, the widely used free messaging app. The update includes some convenient features like the ability to send multiple photos to a friend at the same time and the option to backup your chat history to iCloud. It also includes URL schema support for third party apps.
What’s New in Version 2.10.1
– multi-send UI: can send multiple photos at the same time
– URL schema support for 3rd party apps (see our blog for more info)
– iCloud chat history backup and restore:
WhatsApp > Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup
If you aren’t familiar with WhatsApp, it’s a very handy app that allows users to avoid SMS charges and message directly using data or wifi. I use this app daily, and haven’t gone over my SMS limit since (something that used to be a major problem). WhatsApp can only be used to message with people who already use the app. So it required a little politicking with the folks I text most. Now they’re hooked and we can all chat away without fear of overages. Here’s a basic description from the company’s site:
WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.
