A 21 year old woman from Brisbane, Australia wanted to buy two iPhones only to receive two edible apples instead.
The con took place when the woman placed an advert in the Australian version of Gumtree for two iPhones, prompting one caller to respond saying that they had “two apples” for sale.
The price of AU$1,500 was duly agreed and an exchange took place in a nearby McDonald’s store where two new iPhone boxes were handed over in exchange for the cash. And as you can imagine, she neglected checking the contents of the two boxes which contained the mentioned apples.
The story doesn’t stop here, though. Online commentators were everything but sympathetic to the woman’s plight, saying things like:
- “I don’t know anyone that would hand over $1500 to a stranger without checking the item.”
- “Besides, you can buy a brand new iPhone5 for $700. So if this is a true story then I’m sorry but she deserved it!”
- “And she went to the police?? Seriously, I’d be too embarrassed to go to the police if I’d been that stupid.”
We tend to agree with some of the points, while at the same time feeling sorry for her loss. What do you think?
