Google unveiled its Chromecast dongle on July 24th, and it has been selling like hotcakes. The $35 streaming device is facing shipping delays and sold out status in many retail stores. If you can’t wait for your Chromecast to arrive or want to save yourself $35, there’s an alternative for you. An app by the name of CheapCast allows users to use a HDMI ready Android device as a Chromecast device.
The app was developed by XDA user Maui, and essentially emulates the Chromecast device. The app is still in beta, and does not support Tab Casting yet. All Chromecast enabled apps work through the app, such as YouTube, Google Movies and Netflix. Since the app is still in beta, there are undoubtedly still some bugs to be worked out.
So grab that old HDMI enabled Android device and fire up the CheapCast app to enjoy all the streaming features of Chromecast on your HDTV.
