According to The Korea Times, LG has canceled all future outdoor promotional events due to safety concerns after a recent event resulted in the injury of 20 attendees. The injuries took place during a G2 event in Korea.
The idea for the event was innocuous enough — fill a letter G with balloons containing a voucher for a free LG G2, worth 950,000 won in Korea, and release them to a crowd of frenzied fans. Customers would then scramble for the balloons as they rise into the air and fall back down. Chaos ensued when people crossed the line by showing up with BB guns to shoot the balloons out of the sky.
Attendees claim LG was not prepared for the size and scale of the event. The event was heavily promoted on social networks, and the company only had 20 security guards to control the crowd. When all was said and done, twenty people were injured, some so badly that they required hospitalization. “We will provide them with proper medical treatment as we are responsible for the event,” said LG to The Korea Times.
