While most smartphone apps are focused on providing services for the first world, a new app called Peek is looking to use smartphones to help out people in poor and developing countries. The app uses the camera to scan a patient’s eye for cataracts and other diseases.

Here are the main features of the Peek app:

  • Patient record with Geo-tagging
  • Visual Acuity

  • Colour Vision Testing
  • Contrast Sensitivity Testing
  • Lens imaging for cataract
  • Retinal Imaging
  • Image grading

Peek, which was developed by the International Center for Eye Health keeps track of patients and sends their info to doctors via e-mail, helping patients who live far away from hospitals and clinics. The app will undoubtedly help out underprivileged people across the globe.
