PS3 was the Top-Selling Console of September, Took 32-month Crown from Xbox 360

Sony’s Playstation 3 finally unseated Microsoft’s Xbox 360 as the highest-selling game console in the U.S. this past September. Sony broke the 360’s 32-month claim to the top spot!

It remains to be seen whether this is a fluke, or if Sony’s PS3 will ride out the waning days of this console generation on top. The PS3’s been pushing out some impressive exclusives late in life – including The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls (check out our review here!). But one analyst is chalking the PS3’s sales bump up to cross-platform title Grand Theft Auto V.

According to NPD analyst Liam Callahan, GTA V was a “much-needed shot in the arm for the industry” and that the game “represented over 50 percent of dollar sales in September, and had the highest first month sales than any other previous launch in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.”

“PS3 was the top selling console this month, breaking the 32-month streak of the Xbox 360 leading console hardware sales from January 2011 to August 2013,” Callahan said, noting the GTA V 500GB PS3 bundle’ pumped up the PS3’s sales, “demonstrating how Grand Theft Auto V can shake things up in hardware as well as software.”
