Remember Sony’s QX camera cases? Kodak unveiled a pair of similar products that promise to transform any smartphone into an awesome digital camera, adding powerful optical zoom to the mix.
The first of the two smart lenses, PixPro SL10, comes with 10x optical zoom, 1080p video recording with a 28-280mm wide angle lens with optical image stabilization. It will be available for $199. As for the PixPro SL25, it will sell for $299, boasting a 24mm ultra wide angle lens and zoom multiplier of 25x.
Unfortunately we don’t have megapixel counts just yet and we’ll rather have to wait for few more weeks that get those and some other details. We do know that each of the two Smart Lenses has its own internal battery and a microSD memory card slot. Furthermore, it is controlled using a dedicated mobile app, which will likely work with iOS and Android devices, only.
Personally I like the idea of camera cases. I’m not a big photo junkie, but when I want to take a good photo, I would like to be able to have optical zoom. Carrying around a dedicated camera is out of question, and these smart lenses seem like a viable alternative. What do you think?
