Sony Xperia Z1 Compact renamed to Xperia Z1 Colorful Edition for Chinese market

The newly announced Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is heading to China where it will be known as Xperia Z1 Colorful Edition. The name itself suggests the phone will be available in multiple colors — including black, white, lime and pink — but we haven’t heard these options will stay exclusive to the world’s most populous country. So why the name change was needed is beyond me.

Alas, this remains the same Xperia Z1 Compact under the hood, boasting Qualcomm’s fast Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip, 20.7-megapixel camera on the back, and a 4.3-inch 720p HD screen. The Chinese version lacks LTE connectivity support, but it rocks the familiar IP58-certified dust- and water-resistant body, all of which make it the single best “Mini” (or that’s “Compact”) smartphone out there.

The Xperia Z1 Colorful Edition will start selling in late February for CNY 3,999 (about $660)…
