There’s a war looming in China with Meizu trying to get Xiaomi users on its side. Just recently they’ve unveiled their Redmi Note competitor (Blue Charm Note) and now they’re launching a trade-in program targeting Xiaomi phone owners.
Under the deal, users are offered a maximum of 500 Yuan (about $80) for their old Xiaomi phone and that cash can be used towards a purchase of the 64GB Meizu MX3. It makes no sense to trade-in a perfectly working Mi3, but this could be a good deal for Hongmi and Mi1 owners, which may want to switch boats.
The Meizu MX3 is an awesome device and as far as we know it could be one of the first devices that will be able to run Ubuntu Mobile. Or not; perhaps Meizu launches an entirely new device for Canonical’s platform.
In any case, we are now expecting Xiaomi to respond with a clever marketing strategy of its own. At the end of the day, it’s the end-users who benefit the most from “wars” like these.
