Samsung is apparently working on an Oculus Rift-like device of its own. This shouldn’t be confused with Samsung smart glass product which could be released by the end of the year, but a whole new device that would provide immersive gaming experience.
According to Engadget, Sammy’s VR device will come with an OLED screen, connecting to high-end mobile devices made by the Korean company. A select group of developers is apparently already working on apps and games for this platform, although the product itself won’t be launched until next year when Samsung unveils its next generation of smartphones and tablets. As far as I’ve understood, the current Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 (and 4) don’t have sufficient power to deliver a great user experience. Or something of that sort.
We’re not sure how this device will connect to one’s smartphone, but there’s a chance a cable will be required to deliver uninterrupted graphics. Or we’ll see Samsung relying on technologies like Wi-Fi Direct.
Also, it remains to be seen whether this will be a “smart” device — with an operating system of its own — or just an external display. Moreover, we yet have to see how a VR headset can improve the user experience. It’s gimmicky that’s for sure, but as I’m writing this, similar headsets are used for gaming, only. I would assume Samsung would want to see a device like this used in various settings, but you never know – perhaps this is their answer to Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox. We’ll see…
