ASUS has started rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat update for the aging Padfone 2, which will go straight from Jelly Bean 4.1 to the latest version of Android. Alas, this comes with a caveat and users will see their data disappearing like it’s nobody’s business. Something gotta give I guess; but we’re certain installing all the apps once again is well worth the effort.
The firmware file weighs almost 1GB and you can’t cram it to your Padfone 2 over the air. You’ll need the ASUS PC Tool, which includes the backup software to make for a that much easier process. It’s still not as seamless as an OTA update, but we’ll take whatever we can get.
The 4.4 builds are available for Padfone 2 models sold in Japan, Russia, Taiwan, China, Singapore (StarHub), and the worldwide edition. You can download all of them from here.
As you may’ve heard before, Android 4.4 brings a number of bug fixes, performance and battery life improvements, hence updating is worth the hassle, even if you can’t get the firmware over the air.
