Rogers to Get Android-Powered Samsung Galaxy ‘Spica’

Heard a few rumblings the other day that Rogers may be picking up the Samsung Galaxy in the near future. While rumblings are always good, I was a little hesitant to post anything until I knew the whole story… or at least had some confirmation. Now I do.

Word has it via an in-store Rogers tipster that the Galaxy ‘Spica’ is indeed coming to Rogers… as dummy units have arrived in-store (well, at least in the tipsters store). No exact release dates or pricing have been made available as of yet, but we can expect the Android 1.5 device to pop up on Canada’s ‘Big Red‘ sometime in the coming weeks for sure.

The Samsung Galaxy Spica will come with Android 1.5 installed (although an update to 2.0 before launch would be nice…), a 3.2″ 320×480 touchscreen, 3.2MP camera with video, microUSB, WiFi, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack and expansion to 32GB via microSD. The unit also packs a 800MHz processor and weighs in at 124 grams. Oh, and apparently the Galaxy will be the thinnest Android offering available to Canadians at 11.9mm thick. Not bad, not bad at all.

I have to admit, I’ve never owned or used a Samsung handset as a daily driver. But when you combine these decent specs and wrap it up all nice with Android in the drivers’ seat, this is looking like quite an attractive package. Should be interesting to see the price points on this one. Bell already has the Galaxy up for grabs, running a stock Android 1.5 at $49.95 on a 3-year term. Perhaps by adding the ‘Spica’ moniker, Rogers has something else up their sleeve? 2.0 perhaps? Who knows, but we’ll find in the weeks to come.

More soon.
