Silicon Image announced the UltraGig 6400, a complete WirelessHD transmitter for mobile devices that integrates a 60GHz RF transceiver, baseband processor and embedded antenna array into a single IC package. Specifically designed for smartphones and tablets, the solution enables robust high-definition wireless video connectivity between portable devices and large displays to deliver a cable quality connection sans any wires included. In other words, it will not only allow you to beam photos and videos from your smartphone/tablet to your TV, but also make that process as power efficient as possible.

Sounds pretty compelling to me though I’m not sure when we’ll see the first devices using this technology. Silicon Image is currently sampling the UltraGig 6400 mobile 60GHz WirelessHD transmitter but that doesn’t tell us a lot; it’s up to handset makers to decide when they’ll actually start implementing this chip into their devices… And we’re hoping that will happen sometimes next year. We’ll let you know if we hear something new on this and in the meantime, you are free to learn more about the UltraGig 6400 from here.
