Dell’s future as a smartphone peddler is starting to really come into focus. Following on many a rumor about Dell developing its own smartphones, Dell CEO Michael Dell has allegedly confirmed that the Dell smartphones are on the way! DigiTimes is reporting that Michael Dell has, in fact, confirmed Dell’s smartphone lineup is on schedule and will launch according to Dell’s internal roadmap. It’s only a matter of time before the world welcomes Dell into the cellphone game.

Dell has been rumored to be jumping into the smartphone arena with their own Dell-branded mobile phones. We’ve been hearing rumblings of Dell working on a smartphone since Mobile World Congress, and with recent rumors hinting that wireless carriers have shunned Dell’s new smartphone lineup for being too boring, Dell’s entrance into the mobile space is all but official.

The Commercial Times is also reporting that Dell has turned to famous iPhone manufacturing firm Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) to develop and integrate Dell’s smartphone lineup.

If Dell holds true to its roots as a Windows Mobile PDA-maker, we could see Windows Mobile 6.5-powered Dell smartphones hitting market late this year or early the next. But, there have been some speculation that Dell is working on an Android-powered smartphone, so there’s also the distinct possibility that Dell is aiming to cover both the WinMo and Android markets with their new smartphones.

Exciting times in the smartphone space.
