Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO and the role will be taken over by Tim Cook. Wow.
In the official announcement, Apple didn’t single out the reason for why Jobs is resigning but it’s pretty clear to us. Jobs has been battling health concerns for the last few years and took a medical leave of absence, although he still keynoted WWDC.
Because of these health concerns, the move isn’t shocking. Jobs was initially kicked out of Apple, brought back when the company was on the verge of collapse and turned it into the or one of the most valuable companies in the world. He was the visionary behind such iconic products as the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
It’s unclear what this means for Apple, as many have posited that it is so strongly connected to Jobs and his vision that the company will face an inevitable decline. While the stock may take a hit, it’s clear that Jobs has cultivated a strong bench and process for the company and the next year or so should be set with refreshes of its iPhone, Macbook and iPad lineup. The real test of what this means to Apple will be when it brings out a new product in a new category.
Whatever you may think about Apple and Steve Jobs, he has been a legendary figure in the industry. We wish him the best.
